5 Warning Signs of Depression in Children and Teens

Often, children and adolescents’ symptoms of depression manifest in different ways than those of adults. This can cause many children and adolescents to go undiagnosed by medical professionals.I struggled with depression for almost a decade before I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Although I exhibited all the warning signs, my parents didn’t seek out the help I needed. Rather than ignoring the problem, it is important to recognize the warning signs in order to get the help your children and teens deserve. Your children and teens will appreciate the time, care, and intentional effort you put into helping them.If your child or teen has been showing obvious signs of depression, it is best to get them proper help. Taking your child or teen to the doctor and expressing any concerns can prevent them from developing clinical depression. Before you go, write down all their symptoms and any worrisome behaviors. This can help the doctor become more aware of what your child or teen might be experiencing. If you are unsure of the warning signs of depression in children and teens, here are a few:Photo credit: ©Getty Images/fizkes

5 Questions You Need to Regularly Ask Your Depressed Spouse

It’s not easy to love a spouse through depression. After having our second son, I entered a long battle with chronic anxiety and depression. It took me years to find the words to explain my struggle. I was stuck, unsure of what was happening to me, and without the tools I needed to get better. Through these tough years, my marriage struggled as my husband also lacked the skills required to support and help me. Only once I started medication could our marriage begin to heal, as we both had to let go of the mutual hurt inflicted by the confusion we felt around my personal struggle. Now we can look back and better understand how we failed and what was missing as I struggled alone. Genuine curiosity and a diligent desire to connect even in the midst of our struggles would have been a lifeline to our marriage. If you or your spouse is navigating depression, slow down together, take time to ask gentle questions, answer as honestly as you can, and connect. This can be the lifeline your marriage needs as you walk this valley together.Photo credit: ©GettyImages/Charday Penn

Why Am I Depressed During Such a Joyful Season?

As a follower of Jesus, I want to be able to move forward into the season, live in the moment, and make the most of each day I have been gifted, but I also know I need to acknowledge all the things that might be causing sadness, process the emotions, see them as valid, and admit that life is hard! The realities of life can seem magnified during the holiday season in a culture where we constantly have images of idealistic holiday scenes passing before our eyes.

5 Ways to Talk to Your Teen about Depression

The current statistics regarding teen depression aren't good. In 2025, nearly 1 in 3 high school students reported feeling "so sad or hopeless almost every day for two or more weeks in a row," and they confirmed that they ceased taking part in many of their usual activities. Anxiety and depression have surged by 30% in the last five years, and 60% of the youth who do experience major depressive episodes don't receive any mental health treatment. (https://huntingtonpsych.com/blog/teen-mental-health-statistics)We can thank an abundance of stressors for this increase in mental health statistics in our youth. However, it's important to point out that the teens who spend more than three hours per day on social media have doubled their risk of poor mental health. Not to mention the stressors that over 83% of teenagers attribute are because of such high academic pressures in school. While there are options and resources for parents that will help you address many of these causes, it's challenging to get to that point without first talking to your teenager about their depression. That, in and of itself, can be especially tricky. As parents, we all know how reticent many of our youth are to include us in their lives, even on a superficial level. But it needs to be done, and those lines of communication need to be opened. Here are a few ways that you can hopefully and prayerfully connect with your teen when it comes to addressing such a critical topic:Photo Credit:©GettyImages/Halfpoint
