5 Prayers to Heal from the Hurt of Your Earthly Father

In a perfect world, kids would not have to see their earthly fathers walk out on them. Families would not experience broken relationships. And no child would have to suffer harm at the hand of a dad who is supposed to love and care for him or her. The effects of these events – hatred, bitterness, and anger – would not continue to linger, fester, and cause destruction in the lives of individuals and their families. But we live in a fallen world where relationships are damaged. Because of sin, many fathers shirk their responsibilities as they selfishly decide to follow their own way. Others may be present in the lives of their children but refuse to invest in them. Also, there is the sin of violence in the form of physical, sexual, and verbal abuse, a tragic reality for far too many. So, when Father’s Day comes around each year, there are many people who, understandably and justifiably, do not want to celebrate their earthly fathers. They have suffered from a broken relationship, an effect of living in a sinful, fallen world. Yet even in these broken places, hope can break through. Individuals may have been hurt by their earthly fathers, but they do not have to be defined by that hurt. Healing and forgiveness are possible even if reconciliation is not. For the Lord in heaven cherishes every abandoned, forgotten, and hurt child as His own, and offers them a place within His own family. As Psalm 27:10 reminds us, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me” (NIV). May the following prayers help us take a step toward the restoration of hope and love from our Heavenly Father, who is always faithful, kind, and present. Photo Credit: ©Getty Images/Martin Dimitrov

5 Prayers for the Fatherless on Father’s Day

July 15, 2022: The last call my 87-year-old Daddy made was to my niece. “The woods are so beautiful today,” Daddy said. “I’ve been riding my ATV on trails all afternoon, thanking God for giving me eyes to see.”That was Daddy’s last conversation. Ever.Later that night, Daddy failed to show up for my sister’s surprise birthday party. It was unlike him to ever be late, much less not to come at all. Before long, we realized he’d never made it home. Soon, search parties formed and fanned out across his dark, rugged property with spotlights.I waited at home with my mother. Minutes turned into hours. With each chime of the grandfather clock, my heart felt heavier. Mama kept texting Daddy and leaving him voicemails. Somehow, I knew he’d never get those messages, but I kept telling myself he was okay. After all, Daddy was always okay. Finally, I heard a truck pull up in the drive. We ran to the door to see if it was Dad, but it was my husband instead. His face was ashen. He gathered Mama and me up in his arms, and we sank to our knees. He said, “There’s been an accident. He’s gone.”A long chapter of my life suddenly snapped closed. You only have one Dad in this life, and now, mine was gone. A strange, painful realization came over me: I was now fatherless. It felt awful. Perhaps you’ve experienced the same feeling, too.Maybe you just lost your father. Or perhaps you never knew him. Or you might simply feel fatherless due to a troubled relationship. If so, I understand. And if you’re like me, Father’s Day can be hard. But I’ve learned something. Although my earthly father is gone, I can still celebrate Father’s Day with my Heavenly Father. And so can you. Let me help by praying for you and with you. Here are five prayers for the fatherless on Father’s Day:Photo credit: ©SWN/Image created using DALL.E 2024 AI technology

8 Ways to Celebrate Your Husband's Faithful Fatherhood

Dad's matter. They are the rock that our families are built on. Their love, example, investment, and influence make all the difference in our kids' lives. A father's presence in their kid's lives directly impacts their children's cognitive and social development. There is no one like Dad!Yet, we live in a culture in which fatherhood is being abandoned at an alarming rate. About 20% of dads in our country are considered absent or not living with any of their biological children. While moms are strong and capable of nurturing their children, they can't replace Dad. God designed family to be a team effort. Mom and Dad are the best-case scenario for our kids, and we need to encourage and support parents as they do the hard work of remaining committed to being involved in the lives of their biological children or when they step in as foster or adoptive parents when the need arises. One amazing way to let our dads know their efforts are valued is by making sure they are celebrated! Let's not overlook their faithful service to the family. We've got to make sure they feel loved, seen, appreciated, and honored as faithful fathers. Here are some fun ways to celebrate Dad:Photo credit: ©GettyImages/skynesher
