5 Laments for the Childless This Mother's Day

My friend, Elisa, still tears up after thirty-five years when she recalls nearly two decades of living on the knife’s edge of emptiness and desire for a child. Each month, a bud of hope that flourished was crushed under the heel of her menstrual cycle. Guilt wracked her mind and heart at the frustration, anger, and envy she felt when her friends announced their pregnancies. She struggled to come up with an adequate defense against the accusing finger of her failure to reproduce.“What’s wrong with me?” she cried out to God. “Why won’t you give me a child? Don’t you love me?” Her laments joined prominent women of the Bible and countless others who have endured the affliction of the label “barren.”The inability to have children is a terrible effect of sin passed to every generation from Adam and Eve. Knowing this truth doesn’t stop the childless woman from asking, “Why me?”Hannah, whose story we find in First Samuel, may have wondered the same thing. She lamented her childless state for years. “Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:10 NLT).Like Hannah, the childless woman today has no easy answers. Sometimes, the best we can do in our anguish is wail and pray. If you’re childless today, remember El Roi, God Who Sees, has His eye on you. He hears your laments—pages of the Word overflow with compassion for His beloved daughter whose life has been tainted by childlessness.Your loving Father wrote messages in His Word to soothe your laments. Personalize the following fifteen verses to cry out to Him today and receive His comfort.Five Laments for the Childless Woman:Photo credit: ©GettyImages/Rawpixel

14 Thoughtful Ways to Celebrate Mom as a Family

Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to show love and care for Mom, but what if her “love language” isn’t receiving gifts? And even if it is, there are many other ways to serve and encourage moms who often give so much of their time and emotional energy to the other members of their family.

If you’ve got the card and maybe even some flowers or chocolate but want more thoughts on how to work together as a family to show the mom in your life how much she’s loved, here are some ideas for you. Some are simple and low-prep, others take some planning in advance, but all are ways to include the whole family in saying, “We love you, Mom!”

6 Things Your Wife Does NOT Want This Mother’s Day

I have a confession…I have very complicated feelings about Mother's Day.Yes, I do think it's important to honor those who have helped bring life into this world. Mothers matter, and singing their praises is a noble endeavor, but Mother's Day is tough. It sets up a lot of expectations that often can't be met. It focuses primarily on one kind of mothering role but there are many in this complicated world we live in. It also can be really hard for the countless women who have suffered losses, miscarriages, infertility, and more.On top of all of that, Mother's Day is tough for our partners. They know they are supposed to do something for us, but let's be real: they often struggle to understand what we need. Not to mention the Mom's often are still the ones that feel the pressure to buy gifts or plan outings for their Mom, Aunts, Sisters, Mother-in-Law, friends, and more. I've noticed that all I want for most holidays is the day after the holiday because Mom's holidays often look like a ramped-up workday for us. We are hosting, cooking, cleaning, planning, wrapping, and more.So I am here to help clue you in partners, spouses, kids, and loved ones to what Mom wants by sharing what we really, really don't want.Photo credit: ©GettyImages/andresr

17 Practical Tips for Dads and Stepmoms on Mother’s Day

“Laura, Mother’s Day is extremely hard for me” the velvety, timid voice explained. “When May 1st rolls around, I start to get depressed and anxious. Would it be okay if I just stay home and binge watch Netflix while eating nachos the entire day?” “Sweet Sister, if that’s what works for you—do it,” I replied. This precious woman isn’t alone. For many years I dreaded Mother’s Day, too. Many stepmoms struggle with the Sunday designated to honor motherhood. The triggers are unique for woman, like me, who married a man who already had children from a previous relationship. For stepmoms, especially those who have biological children, Mother’s Day can be full of great memories and fun times. But for other stepmoms, especially those who are childless, the day can be extremely awkward, perplexing, disappointing and/or depressing. Stepmoms have a role that functions and appears the same as a mom, and might be mom-like, but it’s vastly different. I asked stepmoms to share with me the deeper reasons why it might be a hard day, and what would make it easier. Here is what they shared. I do a lot for my husband’s children. I think they should acknowledge me for my hard work.I’m an outsider. They don’t view me as part of the family. And no matter how hard I try it’s not changing.Their mother won’t allow them to acknowledge me. And they believe I’m a bad person. My husband doesn’t recognize, or honor me as a mother figure in the home, so why would his kids? I don’t expect them to view me as mom, but they should do something. When the mom walked out, I stepped in. But they don’t view it that way.Do you hear the rejection, pain, loneliness, anger, and resentment? It hurts. And then there are women like me. I don’t have biological children. I am not a mom. My stepkids have a mom, it is not me. I don’t like people telling me I am a mom on Mother’s Day. I realize they do it to include me in the circle, and I appreciate the compassion. I understand because I remember being a child with stepparents. And it put extreme stress on me when holidays rolled around. I’m a people pleaser. I felt as if someone was always mad at me for either acknowledging—or ignoring—them on a holiday. The only person who didn’t place a burden on me was my stepdad. He always said, “Your father is your dad. He comes first.” Whew. What a relief. Dads often desire for a remarriage to recreate a new united family. They are often devastated, or angry, when that natural bond between their kids and the new wife doesn’t occur. Their motive is right; however, the method often doesn’t always produce the desired outcome. Here are practical tips for stepfamilies. Photo Credit: ©GettyImages/fizkes
